Artist Biography
(b. 1980, Glasgow)
Michael Hutchison is a Scottish artist currently living and working in London, UK.
Although influenced by art of the past his work takes inspiration from many sources outside the visual arts, such as literature, music, philosophy, architecture, engineering, science and the natural world.
He has exhibited in solo and group shows across the UK and his work can be found in collections in the UK, the US, Italy, Germany, Singapore and Australia.
Artist Statement
Created images and symbols have the potential to give meaning to the arbitrary and ephemeral world we live in. They can hint at the fragility of traditional structures or at a latent order under the seeming chaos.
My paintings use symbolic and expressive elements to explore themes such as the illusion of permanence, the place of the irrational in a society with a rational bias, and the ever shifting boundaries between natural and man-made.
I often use the contrast between forms. For example regular geometric forms suggest linearity, order, regularity, rationality, the knowable, Whereas sinuous organic ones suggest non-linear, chaos, irregular, irrational and the unknowable.
I tend to work in a series, which gives me a chance to explore a particular theme in a more focussed way. Preparatory work is often created using a mix of media as a way of allowing new ways of working and ideas to develop. Final pieces tend to be in oil paint.
